ROKU PREMIER
This remote is slightly differently than the original Roku Premier remote. This one uses AAA batteries and is slimmer. However, the functionality is same or better and paired seamlessly to my Samsung TV and Sony soundbar.

Mostly works, except when it very surprisingly doesn’t.
Anyone who has a Roku is familiar with this type of remote. And, for the most part, it works. It’s most surprising when it doesn’t, as its failure modes are…surprising.I bought this remote to replace one of the rechargeable Roku remotes that failed to take a charge after about a year. Not great. But that’s another review.This takes two AAA batteries, which is fine. It synced up with my TV super quick initially seemed great. However, I’ve had it repeatedly just stop communicating with the TV, sometimes as part of changing the volume. You go to drop the volume by one level, and it just gets stuck and mutes the TV. And it will refuse to stop trying to mute the TV. Pull a battery, and it’ll reset itself, and then you can adjust your volume again.Alternately, I’ve had it just refuse to work with the Roku Ultra I have for streaming. Sometimes pulling a battery and putting it back in works, but often I have to go up to the Ultra and hit the pairing button to get it to work again.This is a Roku remote with a Roku device. It should work better than this.On the plus side, it’s cheap. But…it’s got one job, and while 95% of the time it works, it should be way closer to 99% of the time.I really like Roku’s streaming devices, they overall work well and are my favorite, and great for traveling. I often take them with me on work trips and try to use them in hotel rooms. When the HDMI ports are accessible, they’re awesome. But man, Roku, figure out your remote situation. This is easily the worst part of the experience.

This new remote is smaller than the original as you can see by the silicone cover fit.Other than that it works just fine.One main function failed on my original remote control. So I bought a new one.

Need to restart and reset Roku & remotes several times before fully functional
Pairing and setup was relatively easy, awesome that multiple remotes can be paired to the same Roku. Great to prevent fighting over the remote or blaming someone else for losing it.Voice function was very skittish and became completely non-responsive within 24 hours. After resetting the Roku & unpairing/repairing the remotes the voice function finally started working again on both.Would really like an improved interface, button location, button color, and/or button size/shape for the voice function button. Too easy to hit a different button accidentally, difficult to locate in the dark, and confusing for older people (whom these were gifted to). Should be a button on the side or otherwise.Also not a fan of the need to press-and-hold to talk, but I guess I understand the limitation of the software & otherwise. Sometimes dramatically misunderstands you and the mic picks up absolutely every word uttered in the general area. Impressive sensitivity but sometimes annoying to have to tell everyone in the room and the surrounding rooms to shut up for a few seconds. Integration with Alexa or Google Home would be awesome to allow for a completely button-free voice command functionality.
