    Worth the money, nostalgia
Great little machine honestly. Now like all other reviews when you play games like Pokemon on this it saves the game to the sd card in the back . Long story short you won’t lose the save file that’s already on the cartridge itself if you ever wanted to play this again on a Gameboy. Frame rate is smooth no lag. Only thing that I didn’t care for is maybe the game was dirty but I tried out multiple Gameboy advance games and after inserting them a couple times I finally got them to work so if you think your games are clean go ahead and clean them again before trying in this system. Now the other thing is I thought the price was great for this. I paid 81 I didn’t think that was horrible it was better than paying a 200+ for a Gameboy player so I recommend it

Fun way to play Gameboy games on an HDMI TV
Mine arrived with a sticker on the box letting me know it was already updated to the 1.2 firmware. There is some load time, ironically – considering that these are game cartridges. I found the load times on firmware 1.2 to be significantly less than I’ve seen in video reviews of older firmware versions, but it could be I just tested with smaller games.I didn’t notice any issues with the Gameboy Color or Gameboy Advance games I’ve played.Of my collection of around 20 Gameboy Advance games, only “Konami Arcade Advanced” did not work.My friend’s 200-in-1 game multi-cart also did not work. For the price, I was surprised at the solid controller quality, and delighted by the long controller cable.

    The Retron SQ is SUPERB!
For a tiny console for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Advance Games, this console can be able to play all the games; Compatibility from what I heard was fair: no repos or custom games. For a tiny console, it does a great job playing all the games at the right speed.

    Buyer beware!!
I was interested in this console as a nice way to play GBA carts on a modern TV. I like the small form factor of this unit but held off because I heard it had an issue playing GBA games properly, but I hear this updated version fixed alot of the issues so I took a chance and got it. I was very disappointed to learn it still has many issues playing GBA games. I ran into game freezes and not booting up properly. It also dumps the rom to play which leads to long load times and no way to use your saved files from the orginal cart. The controller is actually nice, but if you want to play GBA games on this unit…LOOK OUT!!

Does GBC games fine but GBA is hit or miss
Gameboy color games work beautifully which is good. The games also use an SNES controller which feels like a natural fit for the Game Boy and Game Boy Advanced. This being said GBA support is very poor and Hyperkin doesn’t seem to care. Yes GBA is only in Beta but if half the cartrages you put in don’t even load and of those that do load about a quarter run so bad they are unplayable. Yes I love playing GBC games on it but it they should have spent more time finishing the beta on GBA and letting them run. The Hyperkin website has no updates since the first firmware update which allowed for GBA games to be playable in general (you will need to install new firmwareon the SD card to play GBA games at a playable framerate).

    Works with OBS
Bought this with the full understanding that the GBA aspect is a work-in-progress. Works with OBS, albeit with just-barely-noticeable latency, perhaps this has to do with piping through elgato. After unpackaging, I removed the included 512 MB SD card and updated it on PC using online directions to v1.2, and put it back in the slot. Hooked it up to Elgato PCIe card and started it up. Startup and loading is kind of pokey, but nothing I found too terrible. As a product, everything feels solid and well made. I don’t mind if it takes another 6 months to get the software going. It’s nice to be able to use GBA cartridges again, as I no longer have a GBA or DSLite

If you are buying for GBA games be careful
Let’s get the cat out of the bag. There are two major issues with this system one is the quality of emulation for GBA. It just doesn’t look great. I mean it is playable but I’ve find myself just pulling out an old handheld instead. only about 70% of my GBA carts work on this system. I do have some repo carts and plenty of proper carts. It is just a flip of a coin it it decides to work. The load time while it begins to emulate the cart is like an old school PS1 game. You will have time to make a bag of popcorn while it does it thing. Yep, I have other systems from this company and they all work great this one is just lack luster in comparison. It is all not just bad news. Set up is super easy. The build of console is very solid. The controller feel very natural and sturdy and cable is pretty long. Currently. I would recommend passing on this until they come out with a next generation of this system.

The device easily plays Gameboy and Gameboy Colour games. But to play Gameboy Advance, it’s not likely unless it’s a beta version. And with physical GBA cartridges before you get one, there’s no indication that it’s a beta version or a official release game.

I have quite a few GB and GBA games and this little device seemed perfect for continuing to use these when my GB and GBA handhelds eventually wear out etc.. (GB, GBA and GBA carts are mask ROMs and likely to vastly outlive the handheld consoles)The console is super tiny, connects to TV via HDMI, and has a nice design. The device comes with USB A to USB C charge cable, USB A adapter/charger, and a single game controller (similar in style to SNES controller). The console comes with a 512 MB micro SD card that contains the OS/Firmware. A little disappointed that its a generic no brand card… Not sure about its quality or reliability (so I plan to copy the card onto a branded card as a backup at some point, and you can re-download the software from hyperkin). TBH I wish they had put a decent card in the box for the price. The console runs games really well…GB, GBC and GBA all work surprisingly well. It’s a pleasure to play the games on a big screen and the controller is sufficiently good to make it comfortable too. Id say it’s a decent experience considering its emulation.Overall Im happy… my only criticism is that I feel at times its a bit cheaply made… the cables, the controller feeling (the buttons are ok but you can feel its not up to the standard of XBOX/PS/ Nintendo etc).. the no brand micro SD card…It is what it is, and there is not really anything equivalent on the market. Id say it’s a good buy if you want a way to continue playing your game library.
