The Alpha 7R IV features the world’s first 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with 61MP effective pixels, delivering depth and dimension that was once only available in medium-format cameras. The back-illuminated structure and effective area specific noise reduction techniques combine to deliver an extraordinary blend of low noise and high sensitivity for enormous imaging potential.
Record reality in spectacular 4K
In addition to its impressive still image capabilities, the new Alpha 7R IV performs exceptionally well as a serious filmmaking tool, offering 4K (3840×2160 pixels) video recording across the full width of the image sensor, and full pixel readout without pixel binning in Super 35mm mode. This ensures high quality 4K footage with exceptional detail and depth. S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are also available to maximize color grading flexibility, with S-Log 3 offering a total of 14-stops of dynamic range. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) is available on the Alpha 7R IV as well to support an Instant HDR workflow.
Real-time Autofocus Tracking
Real-time Tracking is a state-of-the-art feature that employs artificial intelligence to tenaciously track moving subjects when shooting stills or movies. Accurate focus is maintained automatically while the shutter button is half-pressed. The subject to be tracked can also be specified by touching it on the monitor when the Touch Tracking function is engaged. An advanced subject recognition algorithm uses color, pattern (brightness), and subject distance (depth) data to process spatial information in real time. If the subject is a person, AI is used to detect and keep track of the subject’s eye and face in real time for extremely high tracking precision. The focus area will seamlessly change between face and eye according to the condition of the subject.
4D FOCUS – Wide, fast, reliable AF gets the shot
The new image sensor in the Alpha 7R IV features 567 phase detection points in a high-density focal plane phase-detection AF system, covering approximately 99.7% of the image area vertically and 74.0% horizontally. High-density focal plane phase-detection works with 425 contrast AF points in a Fast Hybrid AF system that can handle a huge volume of data at high speed, snapping rapidly into focus with just about any subject and situation. Tracking performance has been improved too, despite the significant increase in resolution.

UPDATE 2: since the A1 was released 2 days ago, I remembered I never updated this review about the A7R4. So… I have had the camera for over a year now. It is superb, you will not regret this. I switched from Canon hesitating about the change and a bit doubful because it was a big change. The lightness of the camera is so welcomed for me compared to the Canon DSLRs I have used. The A7R4 feels almost like a Canon Rebel in my hands, it is super light… until you add heavy glass of course. And talking about glass, I bought in the course of the last year a FE 50mm 1.8, a 20mm 1.8 G, and a 135mm 1.8 GM. The image and performance with the sony glass is a delight. The results are absolutely rewarding.Oh, and btw the images that I added in here are taken a year ago with the 50mm 1.8 @ 1.8. I never specified that.UPDATE 1: Ok, so I’ve had the camera for a little bit over 4 weeks now and have tested almost everything. I have zero complaints so far.ORIGINAL REVIEW: First I will start with the auto focus. I have read hundreds of complaints about this, and I was hesitating to purchase it because of so many bad reviews. I researched this extensively and decided to go ahead and buy it. The issue became apparent with the adapter and Canon lenses, I have other lenses but they are manual so it is irrelevant to go into detail about those. With the Canon lenses though, I noticed the more expensive the lens the better the compatibility with the Sony camera. I bought a Sigma adapter MC-11 and with the L lenses works almost perfect. It struggles a little bit sometimes if the area which you are trying to focus is plain and smooth. If it has a lot of things to focus on it will focus right away. Once you go into cheaper lenses like the 50mm 1.8 Canon you immediately notice how much it struggles to keep up to focus on anything, but it is still usable.I have a 75 to 300mm Canon, which is the cheapest zoom lens you can find, and this lens with the Sony becomes a manual lens.Once I noticed this I immediately ordered a Sony lens, ordered the cheapest lens I could find to test it. So got me the Sony 50mm 1.8, and everything of the autofocus works perfect, no hesitation to focus, and fast too. So I think the G lenses have to be jaw dropping with this camera. So will have to save and buy some, or rent one just to test one of those.Images. The quality of the images are absurd. It is almost, almost, medium format quality. For a full frame sensor, the image is quite outstanding. I added some pictures in which you can see a cropped out image of a small area of the original picture, and then the original image with the area that I cropped marked in a box. And the last image is an indoor image taken at 10000 ISO and noise is virtually non existent until you zoom in.I have no complaints about quality, it is quite beautiful.Ergonomics, I have no complaints there. I switched from Canon, but I am not a loyalist, so I adapt to whatever I switch to. The buttons are easily accessible with my hands, they feel right. This camera is light, very light. It feels like it is a toy. Compared to the big canon cameras, this feels like a feather.The menu system… I honestly do not understand everyone complaining about the menu system. I think people who have complained about this are whining for no reason. I have used Canon for over 10 years, or maybe more. It took me 3 days to get used to this menu system. Could it be better? Sure, anything could be better! But the menu works, all it takes is willingness to get used to it.And lastly, seller’s combo added a lot of souvenirs for the same price of the camera alone. So, it was a nice bonus to get free stuff. In the advertising image they had a double battery charger which was why I purchased this specific combo for, but it didn’t come in with the camera, just an extra single charger. But hey, they sent me a lot of extra stuff and it was all included in the same price as if I had bought the camera alone. So I didn’t complain to the seller about that, although it would have been nice to get what it is advertised. Anyways, shipped on time, everything was well packaged and nothing was damaged. The camera was authenticated and registered with Sony for warranty and and future updates.I love the camera. The reviews online are quite harsh on this AR74, they criticize it heavily on the menu system, on the ergonomics, on the buffering, that the noise is the same as in the previous Sony cameras. The full 60MP images are much larger compared to previous cameras, so keep that in mind. This massive file and size image has so much information and detail, once you adjust this with software you’ll notice a huge difference in how much detail it has. There is no comparison to previous cameras. So, after having it with me for over a month, I just think they are scrutinizing this camera to show that they are not biased towards it.Anyways, this is a lovely product from Sony.

The camera is tge best deal I could find. Itâs a great camera. I bought it with the idea of using an adapter for my Canon EL glass. The adapter hasnât arrived yet (different company) so the 50mm lens has been handy for test shooting this weekend. Still have to figure some of these other gadgets out.The fact is the only thing that bothered me at all about this purchase is the shipping box. Thank the lord they double boxed it, because the outer box didnât have any padding, not even newspaper in it so the inner box was sliding all over the place inside. The outer box arrived in near tatters. The inner box was packed better and everything seems to have survived shipping. So Iâm not complaining much. I love tge camera the lens is fine. The sun is out looks like a good morning for more testing.ð

I started shooting immediately. The body is pretty light, and the button placement makes it very convenient/very obvious that it was tailored for a photographer.

Donât bother with the Ronin
Nice camera, but the Ronin thing is very cumbersome and hard to use. We have been messing with it for a month; and donât find it useful. Much prefer a regular tripod every time so far

I am still learning all its features but love this camera. Thanks Sony for a great design! Be sure to purchase David Busch’s excellent guide book for this camera. Sony probably ought to bundle it with the camera instead of wasting time writing manuals. The one thing I do wish is that Sony would start offering camera software for Linux OS (since MS Windows OS web updates have been failing since forever).

Worst thanksgiving experience.
I ordered this just bef thanksgiving and had a nightmare getting it to focus. I have Samyang lens and it worked fine with other sony cameras. But not with this mark 4 camera. I tried to update the firmware with no success. Had to return in.
