Old TV + Chromecast + Extractor + Soundbar = Happy ears
I bought two Vizio soundbars, both require HDMI ARC or eARC. Unfortunately, the bedroom TV is an old Sony Bravia which works well but doesn’t have either, just regular old HDMI ports.Googled a bit and decided on this extractor because it came with an optical cable. Other extractors mostly only provided .5mm to RCA stereo audio cables which can lead to lesser quality of sound. I didn’t want to go down the rabbit hole of researching optical cables.I use a Chromecast device and connection was easy:1. Connect the HDMI end of the Chromecast to the HDMI input port on the extractor; the Chromecast is plugged into the wall socket for power.2. Connect one end of the provided HDMI cable to the TV HDMI port and the other end to the HDMI output port on the extractor.3. Connect one end of the provided optical cable into the optical port on the soundbar and the other end to the optical port on the extractor.4. Connect the mini-USB type A end of the provided USB cable into the port on the extractor and the other end into the provided power adapter; plug the adapter into wall socket for power.I’ve only used this extractor for 3 weeks so not sure about its longevity, but so far my ears are happy. YMMV.

Very Good for Xbox Series S
When I bought my Xbox Series S I did not realize it did not have an audio out port. My monitor doesn’t have speakers and instead of buying a new monitor I bought this and the sound is great and flawless.

Terrible4⦠Awlful⦠Just Plain Bad!
Oh boy! Not sure where to start.First of all: This HDMI 2.0b Audio Extractor, Splitter, Converter is not constructed of quality material. The main components is housed in a plastic casing that comes apart very easily without much force. It’s like constructed of cheap particle board.The ports for inserting the HDMI and O cable in isn’t soddered onto the main board firmly enough. They pushed in when I tried inserting the required cables.The video signal being transmitted from the unit to my TV is very shaky. You have to keep cycling the On/Off switch to stabilize the picture. Even then, after say 30 minutes of viewing a movie the color distorts and the audio becomes very staticky.Worst of all the unit stopped working after less then 3 weeks of use.Tried contacting customer service about the problem. They couldn’t even understand what I clearly spelled out in the support email. Guess I know why so many Amazon consumers ask was a product produced in the United States.I wouldn’t recommend this 4K@60Hz HDMI 2.0b Audio Extractor Splitter Converter, HDMI to HDMI + Optical Toslink SPDIF + 3.5mm Stereo Analog Audio, HDMI Audio EmbedderInserter for PS5,Xbox, Optical Fiber or any other similar product produced by Avedio Links.Caveat emptor (Let the buyer beware.)

Works, but be VERY wary about computers lacking HDMI 2.0+. Consoles seem unaffected by this issue
Seems to work fine, so far, but ONLY for HDMI 2.0+ (additional [and long] note below). The issue appears to be that it is not at all backwards compatible with computer hardware that supports only HDMI 1.XBought this to help my brother combine several devices’ outputs to a single very HD display, but simple aux speakers, now that he has a new monitor (without speakers, as implied) and is building a desktop.Devices that automatically try to force audio over the HDMI channels — his consoles — (or that have dedicated channels, say RCA, that have been merged into HDMI — his GameCube) will work fine, because they are essentially dumping to /dev/audio or bust — without considering /dev/audio might be /dev/null.—However, none of the laptops tested work with this, as they have cheaper boards with only HDMI 1.4 or less. Tested on both Windows 10 laptops and Debian GNU+Linux laptops.I gave it a check, though, over my RX 580 (on Debian), and it DOES work. As my brother got a card of the same line, he will also have 2.0+ support on his desktop. However, his laptop is no-go (as are my dad’s and my sister’s).—TL;DR: If you do NOT have HDMI 2.0+, you WILL need an additional adapter, unless it is a console and / or just indiscriminately tries to push audio down the HDMI channels. (Or, in the case of his GameCube, if the device has no HDMI, but you forcibly adapt pure audio and pure video channels into one (RCA to HDMI, in this case))

Great for TV with no optical.
I have a TV with no optical out or bluetooth. I use a bluetooth transmitter so I can route audio to a bluetooth headset. I had to plug the transmitter into the headphone jack on the TV which means, you can’t use TV speakers unless you unplug the transmitter from the headphone jack. I want to be able with use either without having to plug and unplug. This device allows me to use the optical connector with my Bluetooth transmitter. Now all I have to do is change the audio out from TV speakers to audio device to change the output with the TV remote.

We bought my mother a new television and her former hearing aid connector could no longer connect. This adapter has done the job very nicely. It’s a little more complicated because you have to set up some switches, but it has worked seamlessly and beautifully so far.

You can probably do better.
I got this cause Microsoft thought removing the optical port from the Xbox was a good idea. Anyway, I thought these would be able to get my surround sound working, but alas, I can only get stereo. The picture coming through was the same as I always get, but keep in mind I only have a 1080p tv, so I am not able to speak to the quality for 1440p and 4k. I’m sure the audio would work with the right application, but the Xbox just can’t tell what’s going on with this thing, nor can my MacBook for whatever reason. Now its just a glorified aux port.
