The item does not have a flat bottom.
The picture shows a flat bottom and it it actually has a graduated it did bottom. So not really free standing should go up against a wall.

This was perfect for my home office. I use it as a desk organizer. Could hang it later if I wanted. It holds a few files I will access often. Can label if you care to as needed such as incoming mail, outgoing, and File. I really like it’s designed, and has a clean organized look. Great Product and price.
