    Great neutral sound
I like how it sounds. The bass is. It as deep as Sennheiser Momentum 4, but it’s a bit punchier and tighter. The highs is also more crisp. I like how Sony XM5 sounds, but it’s a bit too dark to my taste. N9 brings more sparks to the sound with wider soundstage. It is more airy over all. If there is one thing to complaint, it will be the volume. I wish it is a tad louder. I don’t usually listen to music loudly, but I like to have some headroom for one of those moments. In terms of comfort, it is quite good. It is not as light as XM5. But the cup is a bit deeper, so that it doesn’t touch the tips of my ears like Sony XM series do. Bose is still the king when it comes to comfort.

    Fantastic sound
It’s hard not to rant about these headphones. The packaging is stylish with guides on stickers to guide you through a unique experience. The case is very nice and includes a pouch to keep the included cables safe. The charge cable is USB C and they include an audio cable. I wasn’t sure what the USB adapter was for but you will love it. It’s also USB C and can plug into your phone or laptop, etc for excellent wireless sound. If you have an older device with USB 4X or are using your Bluetooth for something else, this is a great option. It connects quickly and sounds fantastic. The left up has a sliding cap where you can keep it hand. The battery life is a remarkable 100 hours. I didn’t believe that until I wore them for days and still had over 60% battery left. We’ll get to music in a minute. The 4 microphones and noise cancellation make phone calls as clear as speaking with someone in person. It’s Zoom call certified and will make you sound great. The noise cancellation is remarkable. It’s also adaptive. You can hear it isolate and cancel a particle noise automatically. It’s surprising until you get used to it. It’s cold up here now so I’m using them as headphones and earmuffs. A motor was whirring and suddenly – not. I thought the motor had stalled. The controls are simple. A single multi-function button on the bottom of the right cup does play/pause, answer/hang up and jump forward/backward. It’s tricky with very heavy glove but since the button is fairly isolate I can run my finger along the area and get the desired outcome. The app us also very stylish. Kind of like some Apple product, it seems like it lacks functions. For example, the equalizer is 5 channels. At first, I wondered but the spectrum is covered without it and the basics are all there. I usually leave it off and make minor adjustments in Plex. The fit is great too. The cups tilt back slightly and fit the ear well. The headband is attached with metal. They are sturdy and can be worn all day – I’ve done it often. Turning on ambient aware lets me interact with the family and touch a button to get back to the best sound I’ve ever listened to. The volume control is the entire right side of the right ear cup. Even with gloves on I can change the volume easily.Final – the sound. Oh my! I like the old band Yes. I stretched out and listed to 90125 from 1983 – 41 years ago. I can’t estimate how often I’ve listened to this recording. I stretched out, put on the headphone and played it. Now I know how incredible producers are. There are subtleties I had never heard. It’s back on my regular rotation with a newfound appreciation. I’ve had that experience over and over with these headphones as I dig though the collection. It can thump with Megadeth and soar with Bach. Audio books, if they are well recorded, have a presence that is striking. The AKG Spatial Audio is real and you will hear it. You will hear musicians move from behind you on the right to in front of you on the left. Again, producers have been putting remarkable touches that I’ve never heard.OK – I’m all ranted out. The only real problem is that my other headsets sound mediocre now. I can live with that.

    Epic Headphones
This is my first pair of AKG headphones, and everything I’ve heard about their reputation for excellence is well-earned. The AKG N9 Hybrids are incredible headphones. The excellence is there right out of the box. They come nestled in their hard-shell case, with all of the accessories (charging cable, analog 3.5mm cable, airplane adapter, USB-A-to-C adapter) on-board in a little compartment. The headphones themselves are substantial, but not heavy, with metal on the outside of the cans and the arms, and lighter plastic on the headband and the sides of the cups.Even the power-on sounds give you an idea of what these headphones can do, and right out of the box I was impressed at how musical they are. They are fun to listen to – great bass, a fantastic soundstage for vocals to shine, and highs that float on top without being shrill or fatiguing. I’ve been listening through all of my favorite playlists, and have been impressed at every genre I’ve tried. I’ve generally kept Spatial Audio turned off – the sound stage is already so dynamic on its own that I find the extra processing detracts from the sound unless listening to something mixed for Atmos.Movies and gaming have been similarly impressive, thanks to the USB-C dongle that fits into the outside of the left ear-cup (I also note that even the action opening and closing the access panel is a delight) – the Spatial Audio really shines for these uses. I find the gain is a bit higher with the dongle, so be aware if you like to keep the volume cranked.I’ve also spent a considerable amount of time listening through a wired connection, and the N9s continue to wow. Running lossless audio through a DAC and headphone amp, I’ve been blown away by these headphones – incredible dynamics, incredible detail and great presence. I keep discovering new details in songs I’ve listened to a hundred times, and then noticing something else new again on the next listen. Switching back and forth between bluetooth, the dongle and a wired connection, I’m also impressed at how excellent the sound via the dongle’s wireless connection. Usually there’s a more pronounced difference between a wired set-up and what headphones can do on their own, but the N9s seem to deliver no matter what.ANC on these is the best I’ve tried. Background noise just melts away. When not listening to music, I’ve found there’s initially a bit of a hiss as the adaptive ANC adjusts, but that also fades away after a few seconds, and there’s just… silence. The ambient aware setting is helpful when you don’t want quite so overwhelming a silence, and the talk-through is also amongst the best I’ve tried, eliminating the resonance of your voice through the headphones so it sounds natural. But wait, there’s more! The app opens up a world of additional options, with multiple tabs and extensive options under each. Of particular note is the Personi-Fi feature, which lets you dial in the sound for each ear with one of the best and most comprehensive hearing tests I’ve used. When listening on bluetooth, there’s a cool SilentNow feature that I’m looking forward to using on my next long-haul flight.Between the amazing performance, excellent design and thoughtful app, these are the best wireless noise-cancelling headphones I’ve had the pleasure of using. They are not cheap, but you will get what you pay for – the AKG N9 Hybrids are an excellent investment.
