Works but significant issue sharing screens with overlays
This device really provides two different features in one. First, it will allow wireless access for Andriod Auto or Apple Carplay on any vehicle that supports wired Carplay. Secondly, it will allow you to stream video content to that same screen from any HDMI source.For general setup, you connect this box to the USB wired Carplay port in your vehicle. When plugged in, you are prompted with a menu on the screen to either proceed to the Carplay interface or display the HDMI source to the screen. Being an HDMI connection, this could theoretically be a video game, DVD player, or most anything with a video output.Along with the USB connection to your vehicle and port for HDMI input, there’s also a USB port on the device but the user manual states that it does not support Carplay pass through and the USB port is only for firmware upgrades.In the package, there is also a converter to USB C in case your vehicle supports that.First testing the HDMI connectivity, it works as described. I put a Chromcast on the HDMI port of the converter box and was able to stream anything I’d normally stream to that device. Note that it is likely illegal in most states to have live video in a location where the driver can view it so use accordingly. It’d be okay when parked though.Though the HDMI source could be seen on the screen and heard through the car stereo, there was one significant problem. I have a 2021 Ford F150 with a very large screen. Part of the screen is for CarPlay and the rightmost section is reserved for current vehicle info. A normal Carplay connection works just fine and only attempts to display within its proper area. However, this box attempts to display on the entire screen and as such, the right 1/3 of the screen, regardless of what is being displayed, is hidden behind the vehicle info panel.At this point, I wanted to try wireless connectivity from my Android phone, which is what I use daily. The ad description states it supports Android but I saw nothing on the screen that says how to switch and it came up in CarPlay mode. Well, I found it rather odd but I connected to the box from Bluetooth on my Andriod phone and while my truck still thought it was using Carplay, the Andriod Auto screen I’m used to seeing was displayed and usable on my screen. Of course, the right 1/3 of the Android Auto screen was still covered with vehicle info.For most vehicles, I would expect this to work fine since I assume most don’t have overlays like Ford does. However, this is a significant issue for vehicles that do. Aside from this one issue, which is concerning and hopefully fixed via firmware update, everything else worked as advertised. It felt odd connecting my Android Auto via Carplay but it worked so I guess it doesn’t matter. Missing the right 1/3 of the screen is a significant issue though.
