This outlet/charger is great!Preface:my apartment was built in the early 1960s, so all the wiring is thick, brittle, individual colored wires, through metal conduit, into fairly shallow metal junction boxes. Most of those boxes have another circuit’s hot wire running through the back, and there’s just not much room for even a standard outlet, much less a chunky USB charger! So I DID have to rip out the old box and put in a new blue plastic one. That being said, this outlet’s shallow depth means that very few of you will have to take that step — I ALMOST would’ve skipped it myself, if I didn’t obsess over future-proofing everything.The review:it’s very svelte for a USB outlet, especially one with such a high capacity. It’s also straightforward and “standard” to install — hot wire to brass screw, neutral to silver screw, ground/bare/green/box to bottom green screw on outlet. This device is self grounding when screwed into a grounded metal j-box, which is nice too.The tamper-resistant function on the 120v plugs is firm, but not ridiculous, and wears down a little bit to become perfectly doable within a week or so. The USB ports are nice and snug and feel like they retain my charging cords really well. I do wish USB-C was a more “grippy” shape, but that’s with the USB-C standard overall, not a ding against this product.The charging is FAST! And for multiple Devices at once, no less. I put it in the wall that separates my kitchen from my living room, so there’s usually 2 cords, if not 3, plugged into it at any given time, charging 2-3 devices. All of them report fast charging, and the outlet does not generate excessive heat, which is comforting. The second USB-A port is nice too, to power our Google home mini, or whatever else may find its way out there while we both need to charge our phones.The matte black color is great, and a matching (screwless!) switch plate is included, although I swapped mine out to match with the rest of the room. Details, amirite?My ONE gripe, and as a detail-oriented person this drives me bonkers … the manufacturer, ELEGRP, also makes standard outlets in black, but…. not in **matte** black. nor do they make the USB ones in glossy black. Explain the logic behind that?!?The only close-ish color I could find was either from Leviton’s Renu line, in Onyx, or Lutron’s Midnight color, both of which are like $20 for a standard outlet. Absurd! So the nearest standard outlet just got hidden by a basket, and it only bugs me when I can see it.All in all, I love this outlet, never thought I could write so many words in a review about something so utilitarian, and I highly encourage the handy-ish ones among you to buy this and install! And for the non-handy ones: hire a pro, bribe a handy friend, whatever, but this outlet is the way to go.
