Challenges to the days of primes and 2.8 zooms
I have spent years dealing with the financial and physical demands of 1.8/1.4 primes and 2.8 zooms. And as I move into using mirrorless with a Z6II, I started to re-evaluate years of lens selections. A quick review of my images yielded what I already knew: I used my 18-140VR lens so very much more than any prime or 2.8 zoom. Where exactly does the cost/weight vs image quality seesaw fall for me personally?I scrutinized my 18-140 DX images from my D7500 and found the majority were great image quality. Sharp at all focal lengths. I had portraits at 140mm and 5.6 where the subjects eye lashes were distinguishable in 2/3-framed shot. I decided to keep my 85mm 1.8, and my Sigma 150-500, trade in everything else and get this Nikkor Z 24-200mm lens.After a couple months, I have zero complaints with this lens, and I am critical. At all focal lengths, and all apertures, I get images of excellent quality. Again, portraits taken at 200mm wide open, and I can see pores and eyelashes in the final result. Even just reducing noise leaves me with excellent sharp images.I added a Raynox DCR-250 for macro shots, and am very happy with those results as well (despite extensive vignetting).Except for the physical bokeh on ooc images, I don’t see a reason to get a 2.8 zoom anymore. Photoshop can help with that if needed.The bird picture is at full 200mm. The bee is with the Raynox filter.

I bought this lens as I needed a lightweight travel lens as the thought of lugging my heavy primes on a walking holiday proved too much. I was pleasantly surprised by how this lens performs. Itâs very sharp and focuses reasonably fast. Itâs lightweight and easy to use. I recommend this as a travel lens.
