I’ve use my Air Pods for a long time, and I like them a lot; the sound the quality is great, the battery life is great, and I like the way they look. However, sometimes I like to take a walk in the woods by my house and listen to music or an audio book, but also want to hear my surroundings. While the air pods have the transparency mode, I’m not a fan of how that changes the properties of the sound: in come these open earbuds.I know Raycon is a fairly respected and trusted brand, and for the reason given above, I was intrigued by these earbuds when I was recommended them: so I ordered a pair.On arrival, my first impressions were that the packaging was quite nice. I’m somebody who appreciates well designed and well constructed packaging, so that was a good start. Inside the box was a little envelope/sleeve with an information insert, a short USB-C charging cable, and of course the earbuds themselves inside their charging case.The charging case and earbuds them selves also struck me as being looking well made and well constructed, and I was able to confirm that initial impression after handling them and actually using them for the first time.In terms of audio quality, it was about what I expected. They’re not exactly something to write home about, as it were. They’re good enough, certainly for the price point, but they don’t really match up to my Air Pod Pros. It seems they try to compensate for the hardware limitations by, at least out-of-the-box, being a bit bass heavy and subsequently “muddy.” I’ve noticed some “cheaper” headphones are like that because many people seem to think that a deep bass means good quality, even when the rest of the dynamic range is limited. I had to tinker in my phone’s equalizer to get something I felt was acceptable.These do stay on well though during movement. I don’t normally wear earbuds to workout, I gave these a shot just for the purpose of reviewing them. I didn’t have any issue with them falling off or needing frequent repositioning. So that’s good, certainly more than can be said for many other brands.I’m not a fan of the capacitive touch control though. I found it to be inconsistent, and was either too sensitive, or totally unresponsive, and I instead was using my phone controls more often than not; not the case with my Air Pods.Overall I think I do recommend these. I think for the price they’re fine. I’m not sure what the market looks like for open earbuds like this, as this is the first pair I’ve owned, so I don’t have any other recommendations in that regard. I am hesitant to say “save your money and buy Air Pods” because they are a different category of device. So I’d say give these a try if you’re interested; worst case scenario, you return them.
