    Fantastic clamshell emulator!
Ah yes, yet another Anbernic emulator rocking the H700 Allwinner chipset. The nice thing about that is hobbyists have developed incredible custom firmware (CFW) for these things, which really amps up the out-of-box (OOB) experience and takes these devices to the next level. Not gonna lie: the OOB is only acceptable because Anbernic’s idea of user interface/user experience (UI/UX) is straight out of the early 1990s, but if you take the time to install Knulli or MuOS onto this thing (I prefer MuOS due to the smaller screen), you will fall in love with this thing. The common complaint about the 35XXSP is that the D-pad and face buttons are too loud. I disagree. Yes, the are clicky, but they aren’t obnoxiously loud unless you are in a silent room, and even then they aren’t objectionable. I’d say this goes for the triggers as well — the sound about the same to me. The Start/Select buttons are noticeably louder, but of course they don’t get used as much. None of them require an excessive amount of force to activate, so I have no issue with the buttons.Since it’s an H700, this device will run all retro systems from Dreamcast/PSP (not the entire library, I hear, though I haven’t yet found a game for those systems they won’t run) and back. So, roughly 30-35 years of videogames on a device I can fold up and plonk into my pocket for under $75?! Sign me up. I actually have two of these: the silver one everyone seemingly got and the DMG style, which I prefer. Oh, and there was an issue with the review units having loose triggers which rattled loudly, but this was fixed prior to or shortly after retail release — neither of mine have this problem. The SP has a two-SD card setup, so you’ll need two micro SD cards to make this thing work. They ship with Anbernic’s awful stock firmware on one card and I think you can buy a second with the ROMs if you need to, but it’s better to provide your own for both. Again, Knulli or MuOS works like a charm on the SP and really elevates the UX, so definitely do that… you can even set the CFW to auto-save and shutdown the device when you close the lid and have it boot directly into the game you left when you turn it back on… very cool. As for the ROMs, you can cram a ton of games onto a 128GB card, no problem. Only Dreamcast and PS1 games take up a lot of space, so you should probably curate those, but for everything else you can literally dump the entire library for those systems and still have plenty of space left over. The RG 35XXSP is arguably Anbernic’s best handheld emulator yet — it’s certainly the most popular, and for good reason. I love my 40XXV a bit more, but the SP is an excellent choice as well.

An excellent retro gamer that excels at portability
The RG35XXSP leads its class if you’re looking for the most pocketable and portable retro gamer with a 3.5 inch screen.Likeable:- Ready to play out of the box, easy to add games- Branded Kioxia micro SD card- Lovely screen- Decent sound- Strong battery life- Easy to take with you and protects itself with the clamshell design- Loads of community supportNot the best:- The stock operating system is just okay but lots of community support- All the buttons are low profile and clicky to accommodate the clamshell design. Takes a little practice if you’re coming from more traditional controllers.- Sacrifices the analog stick for compactnessIf you’re looking for a retro gamer that’s easy to take on the go this model is hard to beat.

Quite capable machine and incredibly fun to play
This retro game console is among the most popular emulation devices out in the market as of October 2024. It’s said to handle consoles up to Dreamcast. Safe to say, this little guy that’s literally the size of a GBA SP model is quite the workhorse, to say the least. The 3.5” IPS screen is bright, 480p, glare-resistant, and ships with a screen protector. It includes a 64GB Kioxia memory card so not a “cheap” brand in the slightest. The firmware ships with a respectable size of library pre-installed so the user will likely get a kick out of playing them straight out of the box. That said, the stock firmware has WIFI connection issues and simply won’t work with hidden networks. I got around this limitation by installing a very popular custom firmware. Further, it supports moonlight game streaming client out of the box. So the user can opt to stream and play modern PC games on this device as well.To close, this is an excellent handheld that has the hardware and the third-party support to remain relevant and at the owner’s side for considerable years to come. I love it and the more love it gets from others, the better the support will be moving forward. 5 out of 5 stars, highly recommended, suitable for all ages.

    Love this!!!!!
Great gadget, very nostalgic. It was small but seriously packed full of fun. The screen is clear and provides vibrant color on the game. It was a fun experience during travel with this gadget on hand.
