The loss shall be a tricky one for Lyon to take. L’Equipe’s known as it a “merciless” defeat, opting to go for a photograph of a crestfallen Alexandre Lacazette, who scored a penalty within the 109th minute, being comforted by his supervisor, Paulo Fonseca on their entrance web page.
Right here’s what the Portuguese stated after his aspect’s loss:
It’s arduous to grasp what occurred. Now we have performed magnificent issues; we led 4-2 with one fewer participant on the pitch. However we celebrated quite a bit at 4-2 when the match was not over. We thought we had received after we ought to have continued to consider our sport administration. We lacked expertise at that second. After the penalty to make it 4-3, Manchester United put a whole lot of strain on us and put in a whole lot of crosses, and we gave in.
I’m unhappy as a result of I believed we deserved extra however I don’t remorse my modifications on the finish, as a result of Manchester United began enjoying lengthy balls, so I had to reply to that. However tonight, within the warmth of the second, I have to above all do not forget that I’m happy with my workforce and my gamers, of what they did with 10 in opposition to 11.
Lyon are nonetheless combating for a spot in subsequent season’s Champions League. They’re presently fourth in Ligue 1 however fifth-placed LOSC and sixth-placed Strasbourg are solely a degree behind.
Maguire has provide you with fairly a number of objectives for United when wanted, however final evening’s header actually must be up there:
When you seemed insanity up within the dictionary you’ll most likely describe it as that sport. A loopy sport and unbelievable to be on the suitable aspect of the outcome, and but we’ve created nice reminiscences for lots of our followers. We’ve made them completely satisfied and given them heaps to speak about, good and unhealthy.
We made actually arduous work of it, I have to say. We don’t do issues simply! Half-time at 2-0 up, we had full management. I feel even within the second half, I really feel like we had probabilities to attain a 3rd. Then they rating a 3rd out of nowhere, little bit of a pinball purpose which put us on the again foot they usually handle to get that equaliser.
To go 4-2 down in opposition to ten males in further time is nowhere close to adequate, we opened ourselves up an excessive amount of. They’re a great workforce, have some good forwards, play nice soccer. However we dug in, confirmed nice spirit, and that’s what this stadium does and to come back again like that’s an unimaginable efficiency from everybody within the last minutes.
I felt just like the fourth purpose for them was an actual suckerpunch. Even going 3-2 down I felt like we have been gonna get probabilities.
Clearly [the chance] fell to myself and I put it at the back of the web, which was an incredible feeling.
Any stats nerds round? As a result of United achieved a number of feats that no ever aspect has performed earlier than. Commit these to reminiscence as a result of I reckon they are going to be requested at a number of pub quizzes across the nation this weekend.
