Reminded why I like Brother machines so much
I’m replacing my older brother color laser printer, which has to be 10 years old now. This new model unboxed like a dream. Upon opening the box the first component you come to is the power cord – taped on top so you don’t have to go digging for it. The printer just has foam corners around it, and the printer itself is in a lift out plastic bag with handles to make getting it out of the box easy. It’s 2 inches smaller overall than my old unit an HL-3170CDW and a couple of pounds lighter. Removed all the tape and retaining papers inside ( note there is one in the paper tray too with an absorbent packet) plugged it in. Set up the wifi and I was printing in a couple of minutes. I got this for making labels for my small business, and it prints on 8.5×11 sticker paper both matte and waterproof without issues. The face side of the paper is upside down in the paper tray just like my older unit. For awhile I was thinking it was our router that was going out, because my old printer will take 5 minutes to spool one page ( in the same room with the router so I think the printer is done for now) but this new one is FAST! I was shocked when I already had a print coming out and I just sent it. This is going to seriously improve my work flow. I’m a Linux user and the software driver installed easily on my older mint 20 laptop that I keep in the shop for convenience. No issues with sending a multi copy document either. I didn’t have to go searching for a driver which was nice it was already in the Linux database. Print quality is on par with my older unit as expected, since I print full color labels with white text.

Super Happy With This Printer!
At first when I was printing, the first 10 printouts were streaky and dirty with ink dots, trails and I was surprised and afraid that some of the reviews that I read were true. NOT!This thing prints out color printouts on regular paper just fine!This is NOT a Color Photo Printer. If that’s what you’re looking for, move along! There’s nothing to see here folks!If you’re looking for a color printer to print out color documents for your personal use, then you’re looking in the right direction.This NOT a true LASER printer. It’s an LED Laser Printer. Google it.Is it fast? Nah. it’s kinda slow getting started, but once it “Receives the Data” it pumps out the printouts rather aquickly.I use it primarily for printing invoices and Mailing labels to send to my customers and they look great.

Fast, quiet, easy, reliable
Initial thoughts:-setup: very easy. Had to pull out each toner cartridge to break off some tabs that helds things still for shipping, and pull out some plastic; took about 5 mins without needing to look at instructions. I did look at them later and it was straightforward.-size/weight: a lot heavier than I expected, but its the same size at it looks.-add to wifi: you can run a setup and connect to the printer from your PC or phone and use that to change the wifi on your printer, or you can add it manually via the small one line LCD screen. I did it this way; it will definitely be painful for anyone with crazy long passwords with extra symbols like me. It was easy, just a lot of hitting the down-arrow icon looking for next character. But it added immediately, and was available immediately for search from my PC.-printing: it prints fast and its very quiet, Enough so that when I print to it (its directly behind my wife’s desk) she doesn’t notice. You can definitely hear it, but its quiet enough to blend in to background noise.-print quality: documents look sharp, icons etc look good both in color and black and white-print quality, photos: used some laserjet photo paper and printed out a picture: I’ll put it in the ‘good enough for a postcard or to send your mom her annual family pic to frame’. Definitely not the color sharpness/brightness you’d get from CVS, but not expecting that, either. We will likely use it for our next party invite instead of going to UPS store to print.-mobile printing; TBD, haven’t tried-duplex printing: TBD, haven’t tried-toner life: we probably won’t need new toner for 6+ months and I’ll try to update then.Overall, it does everything I expect it to at the level I expected.If you need a general/workhorse printer capable of printing anything at a reasonably decent level- this is likely the printer for you.If you are looking to print pictures to frame; get a color inkjet. Or just keep printing @ CVS which is likely cheaper anyway.
