For an ultra-cheap projector, this checks boxes and works well.
As a project priced at $89.99, this falls very much in the “ultra cheap” category of movie projectors. Expectations in this category should be relatively low, as even the “budget/entry-level” category are from ~$200 to ~$500, and it’s still considered mid-range when the price is $1.5K. This particular project from StarAtlas meets or beats all my expectations for a project at this price and in this category.For context, I owned Epson’s top-tier home theater projector and have experience with other projectors across various prices, including these ultra-cheap ones.This projector checks all the right boxes for what I wanted, even at this ultra-cheap price. It’s low-priced and it works. I can let kiddos use it inside and outside. I don’t worry about it getting lost or broken after too long. I’ll consider it a win if it lasts a year or two.This functions well even as a cheapo projector is, in part, because this is around the size (a bit smaller) and build of a some traditional movie projectors. It doesn’t try to cram anything into a tiny, cool-looking package while sacrificing hardware or functionality. Yet it’s still small and light enough to move around easily.It is a straightforward, classic movie projector. It’s box-shaped, with all the necessary buttons on both the projector and the remote. It comes with the same low-cost software/operating system that most of the cheap projectors from China, but it seems to have all the features of that software enabled.Because of it’s traditional shape and sort-of traditional (though slightly smaller) size, the hardware seems to be where you expect it. It’s not cramming things where they don’t belong (like a speaker sharing most of the single air intake vent) so that it can be one of the cheap small ones that LOOK like an expensive projector with no other benefits. From an external view the lenses, air vents, speakers, controls, etc. are all where they normally would be on a traditional projector. If the design has worked for decades, why change it, especially when you want to make a low-priced projector?The color and clarity of the picture are good. They’re what I hoped for and better than some other cheapo projectors I’ve tested. You can see the picture mid and low-light situations, which is quite nice in a dark room. I’ll be comfortable using this outside at night when the weather improves. This isn’t stunning like a high-end projector, but I do think it is the claimed 1080p (based on observation, not scientific testing). Not great, but there. It does downscale 4K to 1080p rather than throwing up a blank screen.The picture is also straight and correctly aligned. It’s also easy to adjust between the manual lens adjustments, keystone settings, and other color/picture settings in the software. It has a reasonably good cast range from what I tested, though is likely best in somewhere between 7ft and 12ft. That’s still a pretty good range compared to some other cheapo projectors.It also supports the expected AV and HDMI connections, as well as built-in screencasting/mirroring. That’s a big plus for me, as I’ve found (and even ended up with) cheapo projectors that require a mirror dongle! The casting is easy enough…not seamless like on some higher-end projectors, but a few steps and a decent wifi connection, and you’re there. I didn’t really test the Bluetooth connection, but I don’t plan on using it.The sound is actually passable. It can get decently loud, at least loud enough to hear over the fan noise and some surrounding noise. Like most projectors, it’s best paired with some external speakers, but works just fine (especially indoors) on it’s own. I haven’t tested the sound outside yet, given our weather. But I have a small BT speaker I’ll use (either via this projector, if it works, or routed through whatever device is playing the movie/show/etc.)This would be great as a kid-friendly projector that you aren’t too worried about breaking or for a kid/teen room or even a dorm room. It will also be suitable for some outdoor projecting if you have limited outdoor space (like a small deck in a big city). We’ll be using it for a few of those scenarios.At this price and in this category, don’t expect you’ll find some fantastic, mid-to-high-end projector at an ultra-cheap price. However, if you set your expectations relative to the category and price this falls in, this Staratlas projector is likely close to the top of that growing “Under $100” class.

It’s just okay..
It works amazingly well! I can use HDMI, VGA, and even AV. I can also cast my phone and computer screen wirelessly. It produces some mild fan noise but isn’t a concern for me personally. There are a lot of things I really don’t like. The color is a little bit off but it can be tuned with the built in software. It is very hard to focus and keystone the lenses because it isn’t automatic and the picture is slightly pinching around the right side. The speaker sound is very poor and I’d rather use an external audio source. Other than that it’s very nice for the price point!
