I use this 4Tb to back up images on the Win 11 desktop and laptop. I have other 4tb SSD externals that are at least twice as slow as this drive. It is very fast and easy to carry anywhere. An excellent drive!

If you have apple silicon you will have to update OS to Monterey 12.6.1
I almost returned this drive because it would just hang and crash Mac’s finder every time I plugged it in at first. Updating the operating system to the version mentioned above solved the problem. I formatted the drive as APFS in Disk Utility and it is running well. It’s not the fastest possible USB-C connection for these new Macs (which theoretically accept connections that are twice as fast) but those faster-connection SSDs are only just starting to hit the market, so they are more expensive, less battle-tested, and choice is very limitedâwhereas these G-drives have a long history of use and are starting to come down to the right price point (still quite expensive though). The drive does not seem to overheat as long as you have it in a ventilated area. I edit 4k video with it and have done so in home office, cafes and planes. The portability and reliability are top-notch.

This is the most recent G-Tech drive acquisition, and it is used primarily for backing up key data on a Mac Studio computer used for CAD, photography, and music.The G-Tech drive is not as small as some, but it is very robust, especially thermally when transferring a lot of data at high speed. I have had other drives fail because at the speeds my key computers are capable of running, the drive had no thermal throttling and inadequate cooling. This has never happened to me with this G-Tech series.

Three and a half
I’ve found this doesn’t always mount or start up like it should. I have two of the 2T units and they both do it. I’ll have to plug and unplug before they finally work. And then sometimes they work like a charm. And then there are the times when I plug one in and it uploads everything so fast I can’t believe it and then the next time I have to unplug and replug while it sits there and spins its wheels. Wish I could figure it out. They are the perfect size. They are amazing when they work but frustrating when they don’t. Both my laptop and desktop are one year old Macs.

Works between Apple + Intel and Apple Silicon
Browsed a lot of SSD options before getting this one. I traveled international to an extremely humid and hot environment with it, dropped it a few times, and used it daily. Works great, although it does get quite warm under “normal” use. What sold me on the G Drive was its fluidity between older Mac devices and newer ones. I edit on the go with an older i5 laptop, and now have been using a newer M2 MacBook. At the studio, I use the drive with an i8 iMac. It works seamlessly between them all. Never had data loss or any error in file transfer. Great, dependable purchase.

Unreliable.
Data transfer rate (write speed) copying slowed down to less than 1/10 speed when 75% full. Amazon customer service said I did not need to turn the item to receive refund. A week later a 3rd representative told me that the other two were incorrect. So I went to return the item to a drop -off location (UPS store) and was informed that I had to pay for a box and that that is the new policy with many Amazon returns. Then I was informed by Amazon that it could take up to (3) weeks to receive refund. And this on an item that I paid express price to receive. I am now striving to diversify my spending. Amazon does not care about me and this external hard disk drive was a FAIL. Sticking with my current brand.

I was using so far HDD drives because of their cheaper price and they kept failing on me- just stopped working. Luckily, because I never really trusted the HDDs, I had a few HDD backup drives at a time so I havenât lost any data. Eventually, I got this SSD and so far, I am very happy with it- much faster than my previous HDD and I trust it more because it doesnât have moving parts. It is very compact and rigid. I have gone through 5 (five!) HDDs in the last while. If the SSD keeps working as it is now, the higher price will end up to be cost effective.

These drives are solid. Yeah a bit slower than some out there, however depending on what you need, your not really going to notice . Still fast, reliable and thatâs why this was my 4th addition – donât change this SanDisk, except for adding an 8TB to this exact form factor.
